Psoas Syndrome


Psoas syndrome is a condition in which irritation or dysfunction of the psoas muscle causes lower back, pelvic, or hip pain, often worsened by standing or walking.

Function

  • Hold your lower back stable while sitting
  • Pull your upper body up when moving from lying down to sitting
  • Flex and move your hips when standing or lying down
  • Lift your thighs to allow walking and climbing
  • Stabilize the top of your thigh bone during hip movement

Causes of a Tight and Weak Psoas Muscle

  • Prolonged stress
  • Sitting for long periods
  • Excessive running or walking
  • Performing many:
    • Sit-ups
    • Squats
    • Crunches
    • Jumping exercises

Symptoms

  • Lower back pain
  • Hip pain or stiffness
  • Difficulty standing up from a chair
  • Limping or shuffling when walking
  • Pain when climbing stairs or walking uphill
  • Groin discomfort
  • Difficulty maintaining a standing position
  • Increased arching of the lumbar spine
  • Restrictions in breathing or diaphragm movement
