Sacroiliitis


Sacroiliitis is an inflammation of one or both Sacroiliac (SI) Joints.

Symptoms:

  • Pain in the lower back / buttocks
  • Pain radiating down the legs
  • Stiffness in the morning / after prolonged inactivity
  • Burning sensation in the pelvis
  • Increased pain when standing / walking

Sacroiliitis pain can gets worse by:

  • Sitting for a long time
  • Standing for a long time
  • Having more weight on one leg than the other
  • Prolonged repetitive activity
  • Taking large steps when walking
  • Stair climbing
  • Certain exercises can aggravate the Sacroiliac Joint by putting extra pressure on it:
    • Running
    • Excessive cycling
    • Contact sports, such as football
    • Single-leg exercises / lunges since these involve an asymmetrical loading at SIJ
    • Golf, Tennis, Crunches – due to twisting / turning at the hips

Causes:

  • Injury
  • Arthritis
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Pregnancy
  • Inflammatory bowel diseases
